At one time, the PEU (Pole Erection Unit) was an essential vehicle for any BT network build team.  And the grey BT livery confirms that even during the Nineties, 'pole planting' was still routine work.

Pole Erection Units

The PEU is basically a powered earth auger having an extendible jib, mounted on a four wheel drive utility chassis by means of a rotatable turret. At the end of the jib is a winch (used for lifting poles) and the pole hole boring tool. The turret, jib, winch and boring tool are all hydraulically operated. A hydraulic portable jack and back-fill rammer are also provided, the later being electrically operated on later models of the PEU. All operations of the equipment are controlled from a panel at the rear of the vehicle. The PEU is capable of carrying a pole load of 30 cwt (approx 9 poles).
