Butlin's Clacton Reception

Butlin's Clacton - The Reception Hall

On Saturdays the reception was crammed full of new campers queuing up to hand over their 2/6 (22.5p in today's money) deposit for chalet keys. Lots of luggage and hustle and bustle. For the remainder of the week, the area was virtually deserted, save for the postal section where mail for the campers could be collected.

Note the Fifties style pendant lights hanging from the ceiling, and the cage of budgerigars.

Also in the reception building was a picture board which told the story of Billy Butlin and gave the timescale of the opening of his holiday camps.

The Chalet Keys

Chalet keys
These chalet keys are typical of a those issued to all campers. A Yale type key on a keyring with a brass disc on which was stamped the chalet row and number. Note the chromed disc 'Butlins Filey Holiday Camp' - upon the obverse was embossed 2/6 deposit.
