The Sunbathing Lawns

Butlin's Clacton - Sunbathing Lawns

Butlin's Clacton was a vast site allowing plenty of space for the many holidaymakers to roam about without crowding.

As can be seen in this postcard, the red, white, blue and yellow umbrellas were both picturesque and a trademark of the Butlin's holiday atmosphere.

The colourfully painted illuminations hung on poles around the perimeter of the lawns add greatly to the ambience.

It's 1967, a warm summer's day in June/July. I think this was our last day at the camp and we were waiting until midday for our coach to arrive to take us home.

I believe at one time coaches were allowed to pick up inside the camp, but in later years a coach park on the other side of the road to the camp was used.

In 1973, one corner of the coach park was filled with old doors as single chalets had been converted into twin self-catering suites.
