In the late 1950s, Butlin's Clacton still had large areas which had not been developed. This wondrously open south-east corner had a large sports field. In the postcard (above) can be seen the 'Model yacht pond/Kiddies paddling pool' (foreground). To the far left is the boating lake, and outside of the camp boundary is one of the two Martello Towers.
The miniature railway is running in an anti-clockwise circuit and the Dining Halls still show coloured canopies.
In this later view, the boats have changed into canoes. The red soldiers have vanished from the Dining Hall building and there is a new fire escape staircase . The miniature railway is now running in a clockwise circuit. The canopy of the new station is just visible and a new pumping station is located behind the bushy enclosure, next to the railway. |
