The Hi-de-Hi
Train
Butlin's (Miniature Railway)... |
 |
Located on a windy corner close to the boating lake and Dining Halls,
a ride on the miniature train was comparatively exhilarating...
This railway was my favourite: All of the excitement of a real train,
but none of the smoke and grime.

| Introduction
The 'Hi-de-Hi' Train was one of only three 'steam outline' 0-4-0

type 34 horsepower 4 cylinder diesel engine as standard. Baguley no.3232
first came to work at Clacton in 1959. The two coaches were designated
3233 and 3234.

Here's a 1960s view of the boating lake with the miniature railway running
in an anti-clockwise direction (marked by the red arrow). Kent & Gloucester
dining halls can be seen in the background.

Lasting
Fame
 |
The television series 'Hi-de-Hi'
(1980-1988) is thought to have used footage from 'The Butlin Movie
News' in its end title sequences, so it's fun to think that it might _just_
be us on the screen! *The Butlin Movie News was "Film taken of you the Campers,
during the week"

A truly excellent book is 'A History of the Butlin's Railways'
by Peter Scott. [Published February 2001] ISBN 1 902368 09 6
This is a detailed study, with pictures, maps and diagrams, recalling
the full history of all the railways in the nine Camps.
This book will evoke happy memories for all those children (now adults)
